An asteroid about the size of a bus shaved by Earth on Friday in what spacewatchers described as a "near-miss," though experts were not concerned about the possibility of an impact.

The asteroid, named 2012 BX34, measured between six and 19m in diameter, said Gareth Williams, associate director of the US-based Minor Planet Center which tracks space objects.

The asteroid, which had been unknown before it popped into view from a telescope in Arizona on Wednesday, came within about 60,000 km of Earth on Friday at about 1500 GMT, he said.

I felt the wind and heard the whoosh as it went by.

    Kidding.

I love the SyFy channel and have it on for background noise on weekends. There are usually some kind of asteroid, end of earth movies on and I find them so entertaining. A break from absorbing and making sense of all the politics I focus on that I don't have to think, just watch and comment on the bad acting and implausible plot lines.

All the comets, meteors, bus size asteroids, compared to what's on TV, unless I can see it coming at me, I guess it's sort of a yawn.

the fact it just popped into view on Wednesday is somewhat disconcerting.

What? Newt didn't want to zap it down with one of his electromagnatic pulse guns?
