A pregnant orang-utan protectively hugs her baby as a gang of bounty hunters surround the pair, hoping to cash in on a palm plantation's reward to get rid of the animals.

Luckily for the orang-utans, an international animal rescue group arrived in time to stop the slaughter in Borneo.

Abby.

The mother and daughter were captured by members of the Four Paws group and taken to a remote and safe area of the rainforest, away from people trying to kill them for cash.

"Our arrival could not have been more timely," said Dr Signe Preuschoft, a Four Paws primate expert.

Amazingly beautiful to see a mom protect her baby in the wild. If only all parents in the human species would respond the same way...

Really? You're going to use a story about orangutans to soapbox for your perceived loss of 2nd Amendment rights (which isn't happening anyway?)

No one has suggested that the woman in your story didn't have the right to defend herself, or that she did anything wrong. From the original ABC story:

"You're allowed to shoot an unauthorized person that is in your home. The law provides you the remedy, and sanctions the use of deadly force," Det. Dan Huff of the Blanchard police said.

Regardless, your comment is wildly off-topic.

Oliver - No correlation. Please take it elsewhere.

Gotta agree on this one. I live in Oklahoma and when this story broke a short time ago, I heard NOTHING about ANYONE calling for the prosecution of the woman. Listen to the 911 call, the dispatcher stops just short of telling her to shoot the guy, but does tell her she has the RIGHT to do what she has to do to protect her home and family.

The comment is not only off topic to this very good time story, but pretty blatantly false as well.

How about a bounty on the plantation owner? (Maybe just with paintball guns.) Do Orangs eat palm fruit, or is this jerk just bothered by them being on his land?

Orangs are still sold as pets. They are purchased when they are young and cute, then they grow up to be a major inconvenience at 200 plus pounds. There are sanctuaries that take on everyones' unwanted adult Orangs. As former pets they cannot be re introduced to the wild jungle as they have no survival skills. A tragic situation. They really are gentle creatures.

"... really gentle creatures."

At 200 pounds, you hope they're gentle and stay that way. Chimpanzees are even worse. Horrible to think that these interned ex-pets might be the only way for the species to survive, given how quickly they're being killed off in the wild.

Abby. - Thanks for the info. I had no idea this was happening. I can't imagine someone seeing what I see in the faces of the mother and her baby in the image, and then wanting to kill them...for a few bucks.

I agree.
The terror that they must have felt surrounded by those "men" is unimaginable.

Grump,
You're a sweetheart!
The cheese is because when the Aussie & American troops were together, the yanks thought that the aussies were saying cheese, when in fact they were saying cheers.
The seal pup is because I love animals, & in one thread took virtual custody of a seal pup.

grump, we had this discussion before on the cheese. When someone from America was visiting Australia last year the crowd was yelling cheese, or so he though. Honestly I was hoping they were screaming chez Wiz (joking) but then Abby informed us via a seed that the crowd was really yelling "cheers". I won't say who because this is not a political seed. Now the seal pup was a seed from me on a seal pup that left the bay and went into a home and parked himself on the couch. So the joke is that I'm sure Abby would have taken him home in a minute if she could.

Sorry..If we confused you.

Abby, Except I told you he was mine but I would share with you! This is my best friend and we would have a custody battle for him! Very rare that I wouldn't let you have full custody but not on this little guy. LMAO...Sorry...Abby. Have you heard or seen any follow up to this little one? He has the Perfect personality for a children's book!

Abby and TWW, I only vaguely remember the cheese thing. My mind wanders, maybe it will come back some day. The seal thing was new to me.

I have up two new articles that should be fun. One is magic, the other is food. Yum.
