A giant solar tornado believed to be as large as the Earth has been captured by a NASA satellite.

A video of the phenomenon was recorded by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), a sun-watching satellite that has transmitted a series of stunning photos of solar flares in recent months.

The tornados are made up of dark plasma sliding across the surface of the Sun, with gusts of up to 480,000 km/h.

Wow! There was more than one toward the end there. They look so tiny and yet they are thought to be as big as our earth which puts the size of the sun into awe inspiring perspective.

The immense power of the sun is probably beyond our comprehension, but the clip certainly suggests how much energy is there. Thanks for passing along this find.

By the way, I meant to ask... if it was "...filmed on sun", where did the cameramen stand?

I know, they did it at night, so it would be cooler!

Discovery Channel;

Next on storm chasers:

"Well, we had to attach these rockets to the van, and sealed up the windows. We heard it could be a bit warm there so we packed some freeze-pops for the trip."
